ASE is moving a power module's worst interconnect off the PCB and into the package. Its vertical PowerSiP stacks the inductor above the power stage with embedded interconnects, cutting the loop inductance by as much as 18x and parasitic resistance by up to 50 percent. The development signal is that power integrity is becoming a package architecture decision before it becomes a board-layout cleanup job.
A shorter current path improves transient response and lowers switching loss, but it also changes who owns the model. Board, package, thermal, and power teams can qualify one module instead of negotiating placement and routing assumptions across separate components. ASE reports a 12.2 C temperature reduction in its comparison, which gives system teams a measurable thermal input rather than another layout guideline to interpret.
The exposed group is the board-level power module vendor whose value depends on customers solving parasitics during placement. Within 18 months, high-current accelerator designs will ask module suppliers for package-level electrical and thermal models before they ask for a reference layout.
