OneWare can now carry a Gowin field-programmable gate array (FPGA) design through the open Yosys and nextpnr toolchain. Gowin boards previously fell outside OneWare's open build path, which pushed developers back to the chip vendor's software or a collection of manual commands when they wanted a runnable bitstream.
The merged change adds nextpnr's Himbaechel backend, which places the synthesized circuit onto a specific chip and routes the connections between logic cells. OneWare converts the project's existing pin assignments into Gowin's constraint format, passes the device and package settings into nextpnr, and hands the resulting file to Gowin's open-source packer. The editor now presents those stages as one build with the same logs and settings used for other supported FPGA families.
This does not make every Gowin device work automatically. Each board definition still needs the correct chip, package, and pin map, and the open toolchain has to support that silicon. Board makers that publish those definitions can now give users a build they can inspect and automate; boards that only ship a vendor project remain harder to test in continuous integration or move between development machines.
