Opener Ships Open-Source DECT NR+ Stack, Removing Operator Infrastructure From Massive IoT

Opener is the first open-source reference implementation of DECT NR+, a license-exempt IoT standard designed for 1 million devices per km2 without any centralized network infrastructure.

Massive IoT has an infrastructure tax: every high-density wireless standard with real reliability specs (LoRaWAN, NB-IoT, LTE-M) pulls in either a licensed spectrum holder or an operator-managed network server. DECT NR+ was designed to remove that tax entirely. Opener is the first open-source reference implementation of the full DECT NR+ protocol stack, available today under the OpenDECT-X project.

DECT NR+ targets one million devices per square kilometer, sub-millisecond air-interface latency, and 99.999% reliability in the license-exempt 1.9 GHz band. It uses context-based device roles instead of fixed network/terminal assignments, which means a deployment can self-organize as a mesh with no external infrastructure in the path. Opener gives embedded teams a stack they can build against, validate against, and contribute to without a modem vendor licensing agreement.

The project is funded by the German government under the OpenDECT-X initiative and is developed by the Opener Initiative. Government-funded open-source reference stacks have a mixed track record (see: 5G NR open-source history), but DECT NR+ is narrow enough in scope that a focused reference implementation is actually achievable. The next signal to watch is silicon support: Opener needs modem hardware that exposes a DECT NR+ radio interface to software. The teams building private industrial mesh networks (factory floor, agricultural sensor arrays, utility metering) that are currently stuck on proprietary DECT-2020 modems are the immediate beneficiaries if silicon catches up within 18 months.
