Silicon Labs BG2B removes the design choice between long battery life and centimeter-accurate BLE ranging. Prior SoCs that supported BLE 6 Channel Sounding (the protocol enabling ~10cm ranging via High Accuracy Distance Measurement) ran at current levels that made coin-cell deployments impractical at asset tracking scale. BG2B ships at 1.1 uA EM2 sleep with RAM retention, 14-15% lower MCU active current than the BG22 family, Bluetooth LE 6 with Channel Sounding, and Secure Vault High security in a single package.
The use cases where this matters are electronic shelf labels, asset tracking tags, and industrial location systems. ESLs need decade-scale battery life to avoid maintenance cost; asset tracking needs sub-meter accuracy to be operationally useful. Until now these requirements have mostly forced two separate devices on two separate protocols. A BLE SoC that delivers both at 1.1 uA sleep collapses that boundary into one component.
The CAN-FD integration is worth flagging separately. CAN-FD is a vehicle bus protocol; BLE is wireless. Putting both in one SoC targets vehicle diagnostics applications that need a wireless gateway. That is a narrow market, but it signals that Silicon Labs is positioning BLE 6 as a general-purpose short-range fabric, not just a consumer IoT connectivity layer.
Coin-cell-powered BLE 6 ranging tags with decade-scale battery life are 6-12 months from being a commodity input for industrial location systems. Teams designing those systems today should benchmark BG2B against their current two-chip BLE-plus-ranging designs. The component count reduction changes the PCB cost curve before the ranging accuracy even comes into the conversation.
